The Effects of Occupational Therapy According to The Age for a Child with VACTER Syndrome - A Case Report

Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this report was investigate the effects of occupational therapy for a child with VACTER syndrome.

Case: The subject of this study was diagnosed with VACTER syndrome. He had anal atresia and tracheoesophageal fistula with esophageal atresia. The results of the Bayley Scales of Infant Development II(BSID II) at age of 10 months(gestational age 9 months), the mental developmental age was estimated 7 months, and motor developmental age was estimated 4 months. So, he had received occupational therapy to improve the cognitive, social and fine motor functions once a week for 30 minutes. The tasks of occupational therapy were applied step by step according to the level of child development, interest and degree of attention. The results of the BSID II, mental developmental age was estimated 24 months at 28 months of age, and estimated 33 months at 39 months. Also, the mental developmental index was 76 at 28 months of age, and 85 at 39 months.

Conclusion: It was shown that occupational therapy was an effective intervention for a child with VACTER syndrome who had developmental delays. Based on this study, we suggest that occupational therapy is appropriate therapy to the VACTER syndrome with developmental delay.
